    • Overview

Conflicts arise when pharmacists refuse to fill legally valid prescriptions because of their religious or ethical principles. Refusal by health care providers to participate in certain health-related activities due to ethical values emerged after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down anti-abortion laws. The issue surfaced for pharmacists following the approval of emergency contraception. Many instances of conflicts between pharmacist ethical principles and the need for urgent access to medications led some states to enact conscience clause laws, however a lack of uniformity and guidance among the states creates a confusing situation for pharmacists, employers, and patients. This lesson will review the development and application of health-based conscience clause laws and regulations.
