    freeCE's Pharmacy Technician Enhanced Integrative Pharmacy Training program recognizes the value and increasing responsibilities pharmacy technicians bring to the pharmacy environment. This course is designed to train and educate the pharmacy technician on the core topics of lifestyle, diet, stress management, exercise, other lifestyle strategies, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical care, while taking a deep dive into metabolic syndrome, which is the key to any wellness practice.

    Program Description

    The definition of Integrative pharmacy is recognizing and utilizing components of both functional and lifestyle medicine, while incorporating into practice allopathic, natural, and compounding pharmacy. Integrative pharmacy steps beyond symptom management and focuses on getting to the root cause of dis-ease. Within the practice of functional pharmacy, the patient is encouraged to take an active role with their health while their healthcare team educates, guides, and supports them in their quest.

    Introduction

    This introductory module of Pharmacy Technician Enhanced Training: Integrative Pharmacy will provide the foundation for the practice of Functional Pharmacy. Participants will learn about Functional Pharmacy through various aspects of medicine, including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, diet, stress management, and the importance of staying active, among other lifestyle factors.
    • Identify the various components of functional and lifestyle medicine including diet, exercise, nutraceuticals, stress management, sleep, and medication therapy
    • Recognize the impact that functional and lifestyle medicine can have on improving clinical outcomes by themselves, or as complementary medicine
    • List common “modern-day, lifestyle diseases” which can be influenced and managed by changes in lifestyle behaviors, and habits
    • Define how emotional, mental, and physical health can impact whole body health


    Lifestyle and Diet

    This module addresses the impact that alterations to our food system and diet have on our health and modern-day states of disease. This module differentiates between a healthy traditional indigenous diet, and an unhealthy modern westernized diet, and addresses the common traits of various lifestyle diets around the world, all while linking research of dietary habits to disease states of today.
    • Identify the impact that alterations to our food system and diet have had on our genome which dramatically impacts our health today
    • Differentiate between a healthy, traditional indigenous diet, and an unhealthy, modern westernized diet
    • List the common traits of various lifestyle diets around the world
    • Recognize how research on lifestyle diets align with modern disease states


    Stress Management, Exercise, and Positive Lifestyle Habits

    This module will explore the roles that stress management, exercise, and other lifestyle habits have on one’s state of mind, emotions, and physical health. In taking this course, participants will learn what the adrenal glands are and recognize their role in the body’s stress response system. This program will also cover different stress management techniques, comparing and contrasting them to understand the value of each in creating a healthier lifestyle.
    • Identify the roles that stress management, exercise, and other lifestyle habits have on one's state of mind, emotions, and physical health
    • Recognize the key glands and organs in the body’s stress response system
    • List common stressors that can impact one's health
    • Define the different stress management techniques and value they can bring
    • Differentiate between elements of exercise and the unique benefits which they offer


    Nutraceuticals

    In this module, participants will dive into implementing nutritional medicine into one’s practice. This session will enable participants to recognize the thousands of years of rich history nutritional medicine has, as well as empower them to implement it into modern-day medicine. This session will cover the benefits of patient treatment, as well as increasing one’s offerings in their practice model. Finally, this session will assist participants in being able to recognize the roles which nutritional medicine can play, whether it’s as a stand-alone practice, or complementary to conventional medicine.
    • Identify various reasons to add nutritional medicine to your practice
    • Recognize the role that nutritional medicine can play, standing alone, or in a complementary fashion to conventional medicine
    • List the evidence-based benefits top nutraceuticals may provide to your patients' health
    • Define different levels of quality that can be found with nutritional supplements


    An Overview of Metabolic Syndrome

    In this module, participants will learn about metabolic syndrome, a culmination of disease states and symptoms which are often highly preventable and treatable through lifestyle and functional medicine. This session will describe risk factors as well as states of disease which are influenced by metabolic syndrome. Participants will learn to recognize the different classes of medicine that are used to treat conditions of metabolic syndrome, as well as associated drug-induced nutrient depletions.
    • Recognize the conditions which make up, and risk factors that can lead to metabolic syndrome
    • Identify the disease states in which Metabolic Syndrome can influence
    • Describe how lifestyle medicine, including natural supplements, diet, and exercise can be used to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome
    • Recognize how common and preventable many factors of metabolic syndrome are
    • Recognize the different classes of medicine that are used to treat conditions of metabolic syndrome, as well as associated drug-induced nutrient depletions


    About Our Faculty:
    Robert Kress, RPh
    Robert Kress, RPh, graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia PA in 1994. After becoming disenchanted with a chemical dominant based medical system, Robert took his passion for nutrition and became board certified in clinical nutrition through the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board, as well as trained as a compounding pharmacist through the Professional Compounding Centers of America.

    During this time, Robert opened his own compounding and nutritional clinic, which blossomed into a complete anti-aging clinic housing other integrative practitioners. Robert became certified in Quantum Reflex Analysis, a practice of kinesiology, as well as have trained and certified in other modalities such as Reiki, auricular acupuncture, a Certified Primal Health Coach, and Registered Yoga Instructor.

    Currently, Robert consults with both patients to enhance their health through lifestyle medicine as well other practitioners to help integrate, promote and implement natural medicine in their practices. Robert also provides regular educational Wellness Workshops and writes regularly on the topic of lifestyle medicine and integrative care, and is the author and creator of the Integrative Pharmacist Specialist Certificate Courses here at freeCE.

    • This program's final exam consists of 50 unique multiple-choice questions.
    • You have only three (3) attempts to pass the final exam.
    • You may not leave the final exam in the middle and return at a later time.
    • The final exam has no time limit; however, we recommend that you write the answers down in case you lose your Internet connection or get interrupted while taking the exam.
    • You will earn continuing education credit as you complete each activity, totaling 5 credits upon final completion of all required activities.
    • You will have 12 months to complete the specialty certificate before it expires from your account.
    • This series certificate is accredited for pharmacy technicians
