    • Overview

Thirty-six years ago when I began this career, the GI section was one of the simplest. We had a variety of antacid therapies, and not much else. When the Histamine blockers and proton pump inhibitors moved out front, we had some very efficacious acid blocking therapies. The question becomes: are our patients even qualified to make such a therapeutic judgement to use these very potent medications? In this unit, we will not only explore the therapies, but also their sometimes deadly side effects. We will also discuss nausea and vomiting and how, although usually self-limiting, these untreated conditions can cause serious illness.
