    • Overview

According to the American College of Gastroenterology irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder with an estimated prevalence rate in the US of 10-15%.  While most patients do not recognize the symptoms as IBS it accounts for 12% of visits to the primary care physician and is the most common disorder diagnosed by gastroenterologists.  Direct and indirect costs of IBS result in a significant economic burden.  There are different types of IBS which vary in symptoms and treatment.  This knowledge-based activity will educate pharmacists on the diagnosis and management of IBS, as well as the importance of counseling patients to adhere to their prescribed regimens and lifestyle modifications.
