  Overview

  The ear and dental sections of the pharmacy may not have a lot of therapeutic options, but pharmacist expertise is still often needed. Although there are no antibiotic ear drops available over-the-counter, lots of patients ask for advice on ear wax removal and swimmer’s ear. Because so many patients, especially in the low-income population, lack adequate dental insurance, the pharmacist is often the first-line mouth care specialist too. Referral to a dentist is often recommended, but pharmacists still need to be able to help patients with cold sores and canker sores, and even with product selection for prevention of dental caries, if they can't afford dental care.
