    • Overview

Module 2 – Using a Glucometer highlights different issues that surround the use of glucometers.  This module will reveal when it is best to monitor blood glucose levels before meals, after meals, before activity, after activity, and at bedtime. Discussion will include features in a glucometer to consider and what to look for in a glucometer to meet the needs of different patients with diabetes.  Current common glucometers will be discussed, and selected features will be compared. In addition, necessary steps to sample glucose using a glucometer will be described and possible solutions to overcome barriers to glucometer use including incorrect glucometer readings will be reviewed. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of use of alternate site testing will be explored to equip pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with information to allow patients to evaluate alternate site testing.
