    • Overview

Almost 40 years ago HIV was at the forefront of healthcare concerns.  This virus was elucidated in 1984 and within 12 years combination drug therapy was available. Thanks to eight different mechanisms of action HIV is now a manageable disease. Although HIV patients have excellent, robust drug therapy this disease continues to spread. Community and specialty pharmacists and their technicians have a significant role in managing HIV. Pharmacy technicians have the ability to synchronize medications, monitor adherence and manage inventory all which contribute to suppression of this deadly virus. Pharmacy technicians need to have a basic understanding of this disease and the mechanisms of drug action which will be provided in this activity.
