    Background

Pharmacy technicians play an important role in keeping the pharmacy compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. This series will provide pharmacy technicians with an introduction to key regulatory and compliance topics applicable to the profession of pharmacy.

    Program Description

This 4-credit PTCB-Recognized training program has been built into a three-module certificate, designed to prepare technicians to complete the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s Regulatory Compliance Certificate. Pharmacy technicians who complete this series will walk away with key regulatory and compliance knowledge for the pharmacy settings they work in. This includes an overview of federal laws impacting medications and the pharmacy profession, regulatory agencies and their role, organizations focused on quality and safety, and several other miscellaneous areas of pharmacy regulation and compliance.

In this 1-credit module, the pharmacy technician will be provided with an introduction to how the profession of pharmacy and medications are regulated. Regulatory entities will be introduced along with areas or topics in their purview.

In this 2-credit module, the pharmacy technician will learn key federal laws including the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, Controlled Substances Act, HIPAA, Drug Quality and Security Act, and the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Additionally, laws on selling pseudoephedrine over-the-counter, Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies, disposal of medications, and other miscellaneous topics will be discussed.

In this 1-credit module, safely administering, compounding, and dispensing medications are at the heart of the pharmacy profession. In this module, the pharmacy technician will be introduced to entities and organizations who set standards for the safety and quality of the medication use process. Moreover, components of compliance programs and medication safety will be reviewed.
