  • Join Professor Pete through each aisle of the pharmacy in the Self-Care Specialist (SCS) Specialty Certificate Curriculum!

Pharmacists have long been dubbed the “drug experts.” Community pharmacists are expected to be well versed in prescription and over-the-counter drug therapies. Most schools of pharmacy offer a two-credit course covering this topic. Most pharmacists don’t feel they have been adequately trained with respect to self-care therapy, especially those products that have been part of the OTC arsenal for a long time.

About Professor Pete. Professor Pete Kreckel is an anomaly in our profession; he works in independent pharmacy where he has been a store manager for his entire career. In 2005 he began teaching at St. Francis University in the Physician Assistant Sciences Department. He teaches live on Thursday mornings and has had over 600 Physician Assistant students complete his rigorous courses in pharmacology.

Pete has also precepted over 40 student pharmacists from the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University. He and his students make frequent trips to the front of the store to review every product category on his shelves. For his contributions to the academic success of his students, he was awarded in 2012 the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association “Preceptor of the Year” as well as the National Community Pharmacist Association’s (NCPA) in 2014. So often in our educational careers we sense the disconnect between academia and those pharmacists with their “boots on the ground.”
