    • Overview

Opioid therapy is indicated for acute pain and cancer-related pain; however, it is also often used in chronic non-cancer pain management once non-pharmacologic and non-opioid therapies have failed. When opioid therapy is warranted, careful consideration should be given when selecting the most appropriate agent. This issue focuses on similarities and differences among opioid medications, along with common adverse effects, monitoring parameters, and risk mitigation strategies that pharmacists can provide to improve safety. Federal and Florida pharmacy practice laws are discussed in relation to prescribing and dispensing controlled substances, determining the validity and therapeutic appropriateness of controlled substance prescriptions, and the use of risk mitigation techniques to assure the safe use of opioid therapy.

This course has been approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy to meet the requirement of 2.0 hours of continuing education on the topic of validation of prescriptions for controlled substances for Florida pharmacists.
