    • Overview

Each year around January, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) publishes its Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. Healthcare professionals with interest in diabetes anxiously await this publication to learn of the updates and changes in the management and care of those with diabetes. In 2022, the updates and changes were minimal for most sections of the Standards. However, there were several significant changes to the pharmacologic approaches to the glycemic treatment section. No longer is metformin the sole option for first-line therapy. Diabetes treatment must focus beyond the solitary goal of glucose lowering to address cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic conditions. Additionally, with the rapid development of new treatments and technologies, a new consensus report on the aims, goals, and management of type 1 diabetes has been published.
