Specialty Pharmacy is a fast-growing area of the pharmacy profession. Within specialty pharmacy, there are several possible service lines with specific roles. Many medications may only be dispensed through a specialty pharmacy due to various reasons. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the role that the specialty pharmacist plays in patient care. Outcomes data is available to show the effect of specialty pharmacy programs on patient outcomes. Due to the growth of this area, it is essential to understand the specialty pharmacy process to assist patients. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the patient’s experience from the clinic through to receipt of the prescription and then follow-up. This program will provide an overview of the definition of specialty pharmacy, current literature regarding specialty pharmacy outcomes, and the patient’s experience through the specialty pharmacy process.
