    • Overview

Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Awareness Month, which takes place in April, aims to raise awareness and take action to prevent, test and treat STDs.  The most common types of STDs include bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and HIV/AIDS.  It is estimated that one in two sexually active people will contract a STD by the age of 25 and the cost to treat STDs is estimated to be $16 billion annually.  The pharmacist is in an ideal position to provide education on the prevention of STDs and counseling on adherence to STD treatments.
