  Overview

  Hallucinogenic substances have been around since the beginning of time. Today, numerous people lose track of time while experiencing the mind-altering effects of hallucinogens. Can you name a few dozen hallucinogens? Do you know what the various types or subgroups of hallucinogens are? Well, if not, join our continuing education discussion on hallucinogens, and not only gain a perspective of how to organize dozens of hallucinogens by mechanism of action, but also how to incorporate the knowledge into clinical practice. This discussion is also part of the overall Substances of Abuse Specialty Pharmacist (SASP) Certificate training program. How long does the hallucinogenic state last for each hallucinogen substance of abuse? Are there particular drug interactions of concern for hallucinogens? What clinical pearls should be kept in mind when talking with a patient who confirms the use of hallucinogens? All of these topics and more will be covered in this discussion, with an aim toward clearing any distorted vision on the pharmacology of hallucinogens.
