    • Overview

Real estate agents preach “location, location, location,” while most investigators say that to find answers, “one can simply follow the dollar.” In this continuing education discussion, which is part of the overall Substances of Abuse Specialty Pharmacist (SASP) Certificate training program, we will review utilization, market, and policy trends of substances of abuse across the globe. The left hand must always know of the action of the right hand, and if markets do not correlate with local, regional, national, or international policies/laws, then societies end up in rather foggy area. As healthcare professionals, we need to be up-to-date with all levels of policies and laws, with particular attention to substances of abuse that are also prescription medications. It is in the interest of being able to provide the best care to our patients to also stay abreast of common drug misuse/abuse trends, along with illicit drug market trends. It is at the intersection of parties, pricing, policies, and pharmacy that concrete and impactful knowledge can vastly improve patient care.
