    • Overview

Can you imagine being dropped off at the emergency room by your wife and toddler on Friday the 13th during a pandemic to only begin a 3-month-long excruciating journey of pain? Although not necessarily the view of this writer, kidney stone pain has been compared to various other incredible instances of pain such as broken legs, bear maulings, and even childbirth. Regardless of the subjectivity of pain levels, the writer experienced numerous “educational moments” over the course of needing a pandemic-related delay to a non-elective, yet non-emergency surgery, and aims to share those “teachable moments.” Dr. Garofoli will take participants on a journey through a personal experience of incredible pain to not only provide a patient-point-of-view from a healthcare professional (not your typical textbook patient case), but also to elevate from the story to provide teaching moments. We will comprehensively review pain management efforts such as pain scales, morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs), NSAID and Opioid pharmacology (structures, mechanisms, efficacy, and side effects), and opioid risk reduction efforts (consultation, screenings, and limitations). We will also briefly review the core aspects of substance use disorder (addiction) with particular attention to its respective stigmatic terminology. This is not your average campfire conversation; however, we will utilize that style while also providing dynamic continuing education.
