  Overview

  We are all familiar with the jingle, “Grandma got ran over by a reindeer.” Pondering this scenario as clinicians, the concerns of medications affecting the activities of daily living, and, especially, the ability to safely drive a vehicle resonate.
  
  Guidelines are rampant in every sector of healthcare, and the prominent guiding force in the care of the elderly known as the American Geriatric Society (AGS) Beers List of Medications has been frequently updated so that clinicians can truly assist in the care of elderly patients. Upon first review, a clinician may wonder just what treatment options are actually recommended to help improve function and reduce pain for the growing population of elderly patients.
  
  This program will first review the differences among generations with regards to sociological and psychological factors, then review the changing physiology of a typical geriatric patient (which is the driving force for the changes in medication selection and dosage). The program will also discuss the pain management-related medication scenarios within the 2019 AGS Beers List Update. Along the way, this program will approach this extremely common and impactful clinical effort, with an ear to solving a practice consultant case involving a vehicle accident between a Grandma and a Reindeer, so as to not only drive home important clinical pearls, but also, once and for all, rule on who’s at fault in the epic scenario of Grandma getting run over by the reindeer!
