    • Overview

The number of microbes in one person’s microbiome is 200 times the number of genes in the human genome!  While we often hear about the role of bacteria, there are over 300,000 species of parasites, 5 million species of fungi, and the virome itself contains over 300 million unique species.  These other microbes have an impact on living systems and research is continuing to support this.  The human virome is the total collection of viruses both inside and on the surface of the human body.  Viruses in the human body may infect both human cells and other microbes such as bacteria. Some viruses cause disease, others may be asymptomatic, while many are symbiotic. Certain viruses are also integrated into the human genome as proviruses or endogenous viral elements.  This session seeks to evaluate growing data supporting the idea of a healthy human virome and the pharmacist’s and pharmacy technician’s supporting roles in patient education.
