Overview
Sleep complaints affect more than half of the older adults in the United States and can result not only in decreased quality of life, but also in an adverse impact on overall health and function.
Current interventions used to address these deficits include both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies, however many of the medications currently available can increase risk of falls and other negative health consequences in this population. For this reason, pharmacists play a critical role in the medication management in these patients and are able to provide recommendations on optimal medication management.
In order to meet the challenge of staying current with the increasing variety of sleep promoting agents available, coupled with continually expanding FDA approved indications for use in adults, it is recommended that the pharmacist and technician participate in sleep medication updates as a planned part of their continuous professional development (CPD).
