    • Overview

Understanding all contraceptive options thoroughly is vital to help patients prevent unintended pregnancy. A variety of contraceptive methods are available, including nonhormonal methods such as fertility awareness, barriers, spermicides, and the copper intrauterine device. Hormonal methods include estrogen/progestin products or products with progestin-only methods. Recognizing the risks and benefits of various methods will allow a pharmacist to help a patient identify the most appropriate method of contraception. This activity will enable a pharmacist to manage adverse effects, recognize drug interactions, and monitor the effectiveness of specific contraceptive methods as well as provide counseling to patients about missed doses.
